Dr.(MRS). M. SAROJA
Designation: Lecturer in Chemistry e-mail:
Academic qualification: M.Sc.,(Ph.D) RESEARCH EXPERIENCE : I had been associated with the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore from August 1962 to October 1972 as Research Student (1962 to 1965) and then as Senior Research Assistant. After successfully completing an Advanced Course of Training in Physical and Inorganic Chemistry. I took up investigations on the Electro-deposition of Alloys and Submitted a Thesis entitled ‘ELECTRO-DEPOSITION OF TERNARY COBALT ALLOYS FROM THE PYROPHOSPHATE BATH’ for which I have been awarded the Ph.D. degree. The Experimental techniques covered the determination of electrode efficiencies, analysis of deposits and electrode potentials. The pyrophosphate Bath, a complex salt bath, has been developed for depositing the ternary alloys: Cobalt - Nickel -Copper, Cobalt - Nickel -Tungsten, Cobalt - Iron -Tungsten. A systematic study has been made of the effect of plating variables like electrolyte concentration, pH, temperature, agitation, current density, etc., and addition agents on alloy deposit composition, cathode efficiency and cathode potential. This major electrochemical part was supplemented with studies on structure of deposits by photo-micrography and X-ray Diffraction and Anode Behaviour. The optimum operating conditions for satisfactory deposition have been established for each alloy system. EXPERIENCE: I have also worked on the electrodeposition of Iron-Chromium-Nickel ternary alloys with special reference to the stainless steel composition as a part of a scheme sponsored by the Institute. I have taken part in Teaching and Research Programme of the Department in the capacity of Senior Research Assistant (from 1965 to 1972). I have to my credit many publications on the subject, including comprehensive reviews, both in India and abroad (Annexure - I) and delivered lecture at the Departmental colloquia and outside and presented papers in symposia. I have also delivered lectures for training programmes in the National Institute of Foundry & Forge Technology, Ranchi. From August 1975 to October 1985. I was working as a Lecturer in Ranchi Women’s College, in the Department of Chemistry and was taking classes for I B.Sc., B.Sc., and B.Sc. Honours I have also worked as Scientist for one year in the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Bangalore, wherein my assignment covered strengthening main and regional laboratories to carry out Research and Development work to impact training to laboratory personnel with regard to theoretical principles, experimental techniques in Pollution Control, especially Air Pollution Control and allied fields and also overall supervision of the lab activities. I have a good background of Physical and General Chemistry in addition to specialization in Electrochemistry. I have gained adequate knowledge in allied filed of analysis - Metallurgical and Instrumental, some aspects of Metallurgy and corrosion relevant to the main field of investigation. In addition I have participated in Advanced All India Summer Institute in Micro and Semi-micro Analytical Chemistry sponsored by U.G.C., at the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Madras University, Madras. I had also a short term assignment in the project "Production of Silicon and Poly-silicon Applications" sponsored by the Department of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Government of India New Delhi at the Department of Inorganic & Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, as Senior Scientific Officer. Subsequently I worked as lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore and retired from my services from 28th February 2001. After my retirement I worked with Sri Ayyappa Education Centre, Dasarahalli, Sri Aurobindo First Grade College for Women west of Chord road, V.V.S College, Basaveswaranagar teaching PUC & B.Sc classes both theory and practicals.
