Academic research activities :

  • Water pollution is a major concern in vast countries such as India and other developing nations. Several methods of water purification have been practiced since many decades. Semiconductor photocatalysis is a promising technique, for photodegradation of various hazardous chemicals that are encountered in waste waters. The great significance of this technique is that, it can degrade various complex organic chemicals, which has not been addressed by several other methods of purification. This unique advantage made this field of research to attract many investigators particularly in latter eighties and after. The presence of dyes and other impurities from manufacturing industries causes water pollution. Presently I am working on Indanthrene BR Violet is an anthraquinone Vat dye, classified by the World Health Organisation as hazardous. The elimination from water and wastewater is presently one of the most important subjects in pollution control. Recently it has been demonstrated that semi-conducting materials mediated photocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds is a successful, convention alternative to conventional methods for the removal of organic pollutants from water. Till now many kinds of semiconductors have been studied as photocatalyst including TiO2, WO3, CdS, ZnO and so on. TiO2 is the most widely used effective photocatalyst (under UV light only) for its high efficiency, photochemical stability, non-toxic nature and low cost (prepared in our lab by sol-gel technique). To extend the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 to Sun light, we are planning to dope TiO2 with transition and inner transition metals.

  • Pursuing Ph.D, as an external candidate on research work, entitle " Photocatalytic degradation of waste water pollutants using wide band gap semiconductor photocatalysts for oxidation of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons" at central college, Bangalore University. Registered at Bangalore University
