Background:
The Industrial and Production Engineering department was established in the year 1979 as part of Mechanical Engineering, got separated as an independent department in the year 1984. It was renamed as Industrial Engineering and Management in the year 1992, with initial faculty strength of seven and student strength of forty. It has matured itself to offer education to a size of sixty students. The faculty strength has increased to twelve and also one honorary Prof. of Emeritus from IISc, Bangalore.
Mission:
To transform the entrants of the course into professionally competent engineers in the discipline of Industrial Engineering and Management and to mould them into productive citizens for the society.
Goal:
The goal of Industrial Engineering and Management Programme at MSRIT is to evolve a well rounded individual with basic engineering skills and high analytical and problem solving skills imparted by Industrial Engineering techniques and to continuously upgrade knowledge of faculty in the field of Industrial Engineering and Management by way of full freedom and opportunity
Objective:
The IEM Programme objectives represent and describe the expected accomplishments of our undergraduates resulting from participation within our programme as soon as they finish their graduation.
- To train and educate students in Science, Methodologies, Computational Skills and analysis techniques of I.E practice including such core Industrial Engineering topics as Engineering Management, Probability and Statistics, Human factors, Computing and Operations Research applied to manufacturing, Logistics and Service Systems.
- To develop students in the areas of Design, Improve and Manage integrated systems of people, technologies, material, information and equipment within the context of societal and contemporary issues in engineering.
- To develop students the ability to solve unstructured problems by collecting, modeling, analyzing and interpreting data with I.E. practice.
- To develop students in the areas of leadership, communication skills, team work, professionalism and ethics.
- To make students aware of the need for and to provide the ability to accomplish life long learning, continuing education and professional growth within the field of Industrial Engineering.
Facilities:
For achieving the required competence level the following laboratories and workshops have been setup.
- A state of art Computer lab – consisting of twenty three modern computers where in software suites like ARENA 11.0, SOLID EDGE, QSA, SYSTAT 12, E-Factory Suite of UGS Software Solution and ERP packages are taught in live environment.
- A ultra-modern Industrial and Quality Engineering lab - Consisting of equipments like Digitized Treadmill, Digital Bicycle ergo meter, Statistical Quality Display Unit with built in software, Data Logger and Data transmitter, Digital Motorized Multifunctional Height Gauge with built in software, Timer Pro software, SPC and Gauge R & R software to equip the students with the latest equipments and software used in present day technological world. The lab houses five systems with latest configuration.
- A Metrology Lab consisting of equipments like Cathode Ray Oscilloscope, Profile Projector, Vibration analysis, Tool Makers Micro Scope, Autocollimator, Surface roughness tester, Floating carriage diameter measuring instrument, CNC Coordinate Measuring Machine have been provided for students to get on-hand experience in usage of engineering measuring equipments and tools.
- The department is recognized as an R & D Centre in the year 2008 by VTU. Two candidates have registered for Ph.D work. Also a Behavioral science research lab is established in collaboration with Stanford - Columbia University, USA to develop a formal network by way of sharing our expertise and resources to conduct controlled cross – site experiments and to develop a source of training. The lab is equipped with five desktops and five laptops and software packages like Design of Experiments software, Timer Pro, E-factory Suite and SYSTAT.
- A Center for calibration of metrology and Mechanical measurement equipments is being set up in the department of Industrial Engineering and Management. The objective of this centre is to calibrate the metrology and measuring equipments of networking academic institutions and also other institutions, small scale industries and to award certificate of calibration. An MOU has already entered with networking institutes BMSCE, Dr AIT and UVCE. In this regard the following equipments are procured and established in the centre: Computer – interfaced profile projector, Horizontal electronic level, Electronic Comparators, Surface roughness testing instrument with printer, Computer interfaced Dial gauge calibration equipments, High precision granite surface plates
- The students are trained in basic workshop practices like Foundry, Forging, Metal forming and various machine tool operations in well equipped workshop setups.
Faculty:
Twelve highly qualified and competent faculty constitute the team to achieve the above objectives. The HOD has high professional qualification in Industrial Engineering and also has twenty seven years experience in teaching Industrial Engineering and related subjects. He has obtained doctorate degree in the area of Quality Engineering specialized in Taguchi Methods from reputed university enhancing his knowledge database.
Industry Institution Interaction:
- The project work assigned to the students is usually on specific problems / Issues related to Industrial engineering from the various Industry perspective. In this faculty guide and Industry coordinator bring to focus live problems to students.
