History:

The department came into existence in the year 1962 along with the institution itself to teach mathematics for Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students. In those days, mathematics was taught in all the five years of study and in fifth year mathematics was offered as an elective subject in which plenty of students used to take and scored very high marks. Thus mathematics has remarked always a popular and essential subject and even today it is a popular subject in its own way.

Meanwhile several branches of engineering namely Civil, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, Chemical, Industrial and Management, Information Science, Instrumentation Technology, Medical Electronics, Telecommunication, Bio-technology, Architecture and several post graduate courses were added as branches of study in the Institution. Presently, mathematics is one of the core subjects for all the twelve engineering branches with sixteen credits. The department of mathematics also offers ten to fifteen electives in the four years undergraduate engineering course. The department also grew in size and stature to the present condition consisting of sixteen staff members. Out of which ten of them are Doctorate holders and the remaining are pursuing Ph.D. degree. A great point of interest is that the department is recognized as research centre by VTU.
