Mukthi 5.11
25th November 2005: Free and Open Source Software (F/OSS) is slowly but surely gaining ground in the commercial engineering world. More and more companies and developers are choosing the flexibility offered by F/OSS over proprietary technologies and standards. F/OSS also provides an ideal learning ground for students to understand more about existing technologies and their implementation.
In collaboration with the VRLinug (MSRIT Linux Users Group) the IEEE organised a half-day workshop on F/OSS. The event was conducted at the High-Tech Seminar hall with three speakers: Atul Chitnis, Gopal V and Ranganath P.
Atul Chitnis is india's most famous FOSS evangelist. His articles have regularly appeared in PCQuest and DataQuest. An active member of the Bangalore Linux User Group, he is the main organizer of FOSS.IN (formerly Linux Bangalore) series of technical and non commercial Open source conferences, arguably, the largest in Asia.
Gopal Vijayaraghavan, currently working at Yahoo!, Bangalore is the chief developer and founder of the dotGnu project that has ported the .NET platform to the Simputer. He spoke about the challenges he faced in porting .NET to a handheld platform and the role of FOSS in his current occupation.
Ranganath P, an MSRIT Alumnus, presented FOSS alternatives to proprietary desktop applications and also a short demo of Linux on his iPod and motorola handheld.
The event saw some good participation, and the participants got a very good chance to interact with the speakers during the breaks.
