Cloud Computing:

The Next Revolution in Information Technology

Key Presenter:

Professor Dr. Rajkumar Buyya

Director, Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems, The University of Melbourne, Australia

CEO, Manjrasoft Pty Ltd, Melbourne, Australia

Technical Motivation, Scope, and Program Outline:

The demand for skills in advanced ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has rapidly expanded in recent years as business and society are being transformed by the emergence of Internet and Web as ubiquitous media for enabling knowledge-based global economy. This in turn has created a huge demand for networked-enabled parallel and distributed computing technologies that are changing the way we conduct science, operate business, and tackle challenging problems such as epidemic diseases and climate change. At the same time, traditional method of enhancing the speed of computers by developing faster processors operating at high clock frequency is reaching its limit. To overcome this, recently three new computing paradigms - Multicore, Grid, and Cloud Computing - have been developed based on principles of parallel and distributed computing.

These trends are further creating a huge demand for manpower with skills in parallel and distributed computing. In the past, many universities and educational institutions both in India and abroad have taught computing courses based on the notion of sequential processing and offering parallel and distributed computing as an elective subject. But this is rapidly changing due to the emergence of multi-core and networked parallelism as a mainstream model for building computer applications in industry. This seminar/training program is aimed at introducing (1) emerging trends in IT industry, (2) fundamental concepts of parallel and distributed computing, (3) challenges of building parallel and distributed systems and applications, (4) technologies for building your own parallel and distributed computing systems or “virtual” supercomputers by harnessing existing networked computers such as interconnected Windows PCs using LAN, (5) parallel/distributed programming using the state-of-the-art Aneka software technology, and (6) guidelines for teaching parallel/distributed computing for science and engineering graduates.

Speaker’s Professional Biography: Dr. Rajkumar Buyya is Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering; and Director of the Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems (CLOUDS) Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, Australia.  He is also serving as the founding CEO of Manjrasoft Pty Ltd., a spin-off company of the University, commercialising its innovations in Grid and Cloud Computing. He has authored and published over 300 research papers and four text books. The books on emerging topics that Dr. Buyya edited include, High Performance Cluster Computing (Prentice Hall, USA, 1999), Content Delivery Networks (Springer, Germany, 2008) and Market-Oriented Grid and Utility Computing (Wiley, USA, 2009). Dr. Buyya has contributed to the creation of high-performance computing and communication system software for Indian PARAM supercomputers. He has pioneered Economic Paradigm for Service-Oriented Distributed Computing and developed key Grid and Cloud Computing technologies such as Gridbus and Aneka that power the emerging e-Science and e-Business applications. Software technologies for Grid and Cloud computing developed under Dr. Buyya's leadership have gained rapid acceptance and are in use at several academic institutions and commercial enterprises in 40 countries around the world.

Dr. Buyya has led the establishment and development of key community activities, including serving as foundation Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing and four IEEE conferences (CCGrid, Cluster, Grid, and e-Science). He has presented over 200 invited talks on his vision on IT Futures and advanced computing technologies at international conferences and institutions in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. These contributions and international research leadership of Dr. Buyya are recognised through the award of "2009 IEEE Medal for Excellence in Scalable Computing" from the IEEE Computer Society, USA.
